Welcome!

Welcome to the Belarus Blog!

This blog focuses on Belarus, its significance in the Eurovision Song Contest and other important history.

I wanted to create a blog for this nation because I was completely blown away by their 2019 finale
performance and how well put together it was.

The youngest participant to ever make it to the finale - Zena - performed her song 'Like It' with full confidence.

I never knew what Eurovision was before this year, which is very surprising. I am slowly learning how huge of a competition this is and how many famous artists have evolved from this show.

The song was performed 16 th  but failed to qualify for the next round, finishing in 14 th  place. She attended the Minsk State Linguistic University and then started her official journey to becoming a singer. Starting with releasing her first single in 2009, she started releasing music. Her singles are what got her picked to represent Belarus in the Eurovision Song Contest – where sang the so...

National Identity in Belarus

Welcome to Belarus! It’s been its own nation for a short while but, has still managed to form its own unique identity. With a population of 9,477,918, it’s located in Eastern Europe. Belarus borders five countries: Ukraine to the south, Russia to the northeast, Lithuania to the northwest, Poland to the west and Latvia to the north. Today I want to explain the national identity of Belarus in a few words. First, the concept of national identity was created as a replacement of religion as a way to keep people together in nations. National identity is represented as a combination of language, race and the borders of the country. Many different people who have their own takes on the definition of national identity, but I think Anthony Smith (1991) explains it the best. He believes that there are five fundamental features of national identity: historic territory/homeland, common myths/historical moments, common public culture, common legal rights and a common economy...
